Upcoming garbage compactor installation may cause delays at the Olympic View Transfer Station

July 28, 2025

The Kitsap County Solid Waste Division is advising customers to anticipate delays at the Olympic View Transfer Station [ [link removed] ] later this summer due to the planned installation of a second industrial garbage compactor.

During the installation, contractors will shut down the facility’s main power supply and switch to generator power. This may slow credit card processing and lead to longer wait times at the payment window. Other service disruptions are also possible.

The project is expected to begin in late August or early September, but the exact dates are not yet known. Contractors are currently awaiting the arrival of a final electrical part. If the part passes inspection, they’ll immediately begin the installation.

“We won’t get much warning before they start, so we’re letting customers know now so they can plan ahead,” said Kevin Bevelhimer, Senior Program Manager with Kitsap County’s Solid Waste Division. “We encourage everyone to check the transfer station website [ [link removed] ] for the most up-to-date information before making a dump run.”

Once project dates are known, Kitsap County will notify the public through the Recycling and Garbage News email newsletter [ [link removed] ] and on the county’s social media.

*About the project*

The Olympic View Transfer Station currently operates with one aging garbage compactor that has required frequent repairs and maintenance in recent years. To improve reliability and increase capacity at the facility, the county purchased a second compactor in 2023 for $1.4 million.

The new machine — a SSI Shredding Systems 4500SPH Pre-load Compactor [ [link removed] ] — weighs 176,000 pounds and provides 200 tons of compaction force. Once operational, it will work alongside the existing compactor to process and load garbage into 48-foot intermodal containers, which are then shipped by train to the Columbia Ridge Landfill [ [link removed] ] in Arlington, Oregon.

The original compactor will remain in operation until its scheduled replacement in 2026.
