The Kitsap County Solid Waste Division is advising customers to anticipate delays at the Olympic View Transfer Station later this summer due to the planned installation of a second industrial garbage compactor.
During the installation, contractors will shut down the facility’s main power supply and switch to generator power. This may slow credit card processing and lead to longer wait times at the payment window. Other service disruptions are also possible.
The project is expected to begin in late August or early September, but the exact dates are not yet known. Contractors are currently awaiting the arrival of a final electrical part. If the part passes inspection, they’ll immediately begin the installation.
“We won’t get much warning before they start, so we’re letting customers know now so they can plan ahead,” said Kevin Bevelhimer, Senior Program Manager with Kitsap County’s Solid Waste Division. “We encourage everyone to check the transfer station website for the most up-to-date information before making a dump run.”
About the project
The Olympic View Transfer Station currently operates with one aging garbage compactor that has required frequent repairs and maintenance in recent years. To improve reliability and increase capacity at the facility, the county purchased a second compactor in 2023 for $1.4 million.
The original compactor will remain in operation until its scheduled replacement in 2026.
