Last week, the Trump administration fired over 1,300 State Department employees , a plan months in the making, just days after the Supreme Court gave the green light for Donald Trump to proceed with mass layoffs at the Department of Education.
I voted against the legislation that set this process in motion because I know how much is at stake for Virginia’s students, families, and workers.
Here’s what’s happening:
* 1,400 Education Department employees are being let go — many from right here in the DMV area
* Title I funding, which supports schools with high numbers of low-income students, is now at risk of being turned into block grants that states can redirect
* Student loans may be handed over to the Small Business Administration, a move that experts say could spark total chaos
* About 3,000 State Department employees have left the agency through firings and buyouts
* Disrupting the State Department like this will certainly put U.S. national security at risk
* Cuts to the State Department will also cut aid geared towards mothers, the LGBTB+ community, minority groups, and others in need across the planet .
* And that’s just the tip of the iceberg, JOhn.
This isn’t just an administrative reshuffle. It’s not balancing a budget. It’s a deliberate effort to hollow out the federal protections, damage our reputation on the world stage, and make it harder for our young people to pursue a career.
If we don’t push back now — and keep leaders in Congress who are willing to fight — we risk a future where opportunity in education depends entirely on your ZIP code.
