Last week, the Trump administration fired over 1,300 State Department employees, a plan months in the making, just days after the Supreme Court gave the green light for Donald Trump to proceed with mass layoffs at the Department of Education.
I voted against the legislation that set this process in motion because I know how much is at stake for Virginia’s students, families, and workers.
Here’s what’s happening:
1,400 Education Department employees are being let go — many from right here in the DMV area
Title I funding, which supports schools with high numbers of low-income students, is now at risk of being turned into block grants that states can redirect
About 3,000 State Department employees have left the agency through firings and buyouts
Disrupting the State Department like this will certainly put U.S. national security at risk
Cuts to the State Department will also cut aid geared towards mothers, the LGBTB+ community, minority groups, and others in need across the planet.
And that’s just the tip of the iceberg, JOhn.
This isn’t just an administrative reshuffle. It’s not balancing a budget. It’s a deliberate effort to hollow out the federal protections, damage our reputation on the world stage, and make it harder for our young people to pursue a career.
If we don’t push back now — and keep leaders in Congress who are willing to fight — we risk a future where opportunity in education depends entirely on your ZIP code.
Virginia families can’t afford to be a testing ground for dismantling our education system. We can’t sit back and watch as our national security is threatened. And I won’t sit silently while students, global aid, and civil rights are put at risk.
