Email from Rep. Hinson Friend, Last week, the Trump Administration took bold action to further elevate the security of American agriculture. Farms, food, and our supply chains are national security assets, and they should be treated as such. Food security is national security, and no one knows that better than our farmers and producers. Under Secretary Rollins’ “Make Agriculture Great Again” initiative, the Trump Administration lays out its plan to safeguard our food supply, strengthen infrastructure, and defend U.S. ag innovation from our foreign adversaries like China. Right now, farmers rely on China for feed additives, animal nutrition supplements, as well as other ag inputs—compromising the integrity of our food supply and giving China leverage to shut off our access. I was recently touring a small feed mill in my district and noticed a bag of feed produced by a Chinese manufacturer. I mentioned it to the owner of the mill and he confirmed that right now, China has significant control of many critical ag inputs. That’s why I introduced my bipartisan Securing American Agriculture Act to reduce our reliance on foreign adversaries for critical ag products. President Trump incorporated this bill into the Make Agriculture Great Again initiative to help end our dangerous reliance on China. President Trump’s leadership will change the course of history and ensure America is positioned to win our strategic competition with China on every front. Under this plan utilizing my Securing American Agriculture Act, USDA will create a list of critical ag inputs and materials and conduct regular assessments to identify risks and security vulnerabilities to the ag sector. This reporting can then be submitted to Congress so we can implement strong policies protecting the ag sector. I had a great conversation with Secretary Rollins on Air Force One a couple weeks ago and look forward to building on these efforts for Iowans. We must get my bill to the president’s desk so farmers can continue doing what they do best—feeding and fueling the world. Sincerely, Honoring Iowa's Veterans at the Delaware County Fair Last week at the Delaware County Fair, I had the opportunity to extend a big congratulations to the patriots who received this year’s Veterans Honor Awards. It was an honor to participate in this ceremony, and I am so grateful for our veterans' patriotism, leadership, and service to our nation. Our way of life in the U.S. is only possible because of heroes like them, and I’ll continue fighting to ensure Iowa veterans receive the support, care, and resources they have earned. Meeting with Iowans in Washington, D.C. It is always great to catch up with the Iowa Corn Growers Association. We discussed the importance of promoting Iowa biofuels and supporting new market opportunities for Iowa ag. I'll keep fighting for policies that strengthen rural economies, protect our farmers, and ensure Iowa ag thrives! I also had a productive meeting with folks from the American Soybean Association today. One of the best parts about my job is I get to hear from the very people who produce the food at our kitchen tables and take their feedback with me to shape policy and improve the lives of Iowans. Soybeans are one of Iowa’s top exports — trade access is absolutely vital to its success, and I’m grateful to President Trump & Secretary Rollins for fighting to prioritize new markets and fair trade agreements. I also had the pleasure to visit with the University of Northern Iowa’s Upward Bound Students just outside our nation’s capital. I'm so glad I had the opportunity to thank these students for sharing their success stories in DC. Programs like these open doors to new opportunities and equip our students with the tools they need to thrive in the classroom, in the workforce, and beyond! Team Hinson Out and About in IA-02 Last week, my team visited Surgery Center Cedar Rapids to tour the ambulatory surgery center and learn more about its operations. I appreciate the work being done here to support options for Iowans when it comes to their healthcare, and I will continue to build on my efforts, expanding and strengthening access to quality care. Last week, my team had a great tour with the Linn County Farm Bureau and Kirkwood Community College. They visited the Kroul family farm and the Broulik family farm in Mt. Vernon, as well as Dan and Debbie’s Creamery in Ely! Our Iowa farmers feed and fuel the world, and I will continue working hard to support our farmers and rural communities. In Case You Missed It: Quick Hits I joined Stuart Varney on Fox Business to talk about President Trump delivering on his America First economic agenda for working families. Click here to watch! I celebrated the one-year anniversary of my stillbirth prevention legislation being signed into law. I applauded President Trump for finalizing a landmark deal that opens up Indonesia's entire market to the US for the first time in history. I congratulated WWII veteran and Iowan Don Swanson on his 100th birthday and thanked him for his service. I praised President Trump for the $27 billion surplus in June, something that hasn't happened since Trump's first term. I prayed for the safety of our president and unity for our country on the day President Trump survived an assassination attempt last year.
