Dear Fellow American,

Fort Wagner, 1863. Bullets flying. Men falling.

And in the middle of it all, William Carney—an African American
Union soldier and son of slaves—carries the flag.

When the color sergeant is shot down, Carney picks up the banner.
He’s hit once. Then again. Then again. Then again.

Bleeding and barely able to stand, he reaches his company and says one
thing:

“BOYS, THE OLD FLAG NEVER TOUCHED THE GROUND.”

That’s what the American flag means.

Sacrifice. Duty. Resolve. And the belief that this country is worth
fighting for.

OUR FREE EBOOK, _FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS_, TELLS STORIES LIKE CARNEY’S.

It also uncovers the forgotten history of the flag’s creation,
design, and enduring power. It’s a tribute to the ideals we must not
let die.

Our team at Heritage fights every day to preserve the principles our
flag represents—liberty, justice, and truth.

We hope you’ll read this—and stand with us.
