Fort Wagner, 1863. Bullets flying. Men falling.

And in the middle of it all, William Carney—an African American Union soldier and son of slaves—carries the flag.

When the color sergeant is shot down, Carney picks up the banner. He’s hit once. Then again. Then again. Then again.

Bleeding and barely able to stand, he reaches his company and says one thing:

“Boys, the old flag never touched the ground.”

That’s what the American flag means.
