Growing up in my Kenyan community, school was one of the
places that my mates and I felt safe. School was where we could learn and
begin building a chance at a better future.

But due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the adolescent girls I work with here in
Kenya are now staying home from school — and facing some of the biggest
challenges in their lives. Without a safe place, they lose access to
resources and support, and risk becoming victims of abuse or early
marriage.

"Back to school" day for girls in Kalaliwe village, a pastoral community
in rural Kenya. Mercy Corps paved the way to enroll them in formal
education through the GIRL program, designed to empower girls through life
skills training.

tremendous effect in communities worldwide where girls’ education is not a
