Pittsburgh Public Schools board President Gene Walker started working in education in 2008, hired by the new Pittsburgh Promise to help expand college access for city kids ([link removed]) .

Though his degree is in business and accounting, Walker is still in education 17 years later. And his re-election by just five votes in the May primary means he will play a key role in shaping the school consolidation plan that would transform the district forever ([link removed]) .
