ACTION SPOTLIGHT
Say NO to Flesh-Dissolving Chemicals in
Our Communities
Hydrogen fluoride (HF) is an extremely
hazardous chemical that can dissolve skin, muscle, and bone, and
kill or permanently disable people who inhale or touch it. HF is
still used by more than 40 oil refineries across the United
States, despite there being safer alternatives. This needlessly
puts 19 million people in danger of getting caught in deadly
vapor clouds that can form and travel for miles when HF is
released into the air.
NRDC filed a petition with the EPA to
stop the use of HF in oil refineries. But the agency denied our
petition, refusing to protect the public from this deadly
chemical — so we’re taking them to court.
To help build our case, we need YOU to
let the EPA know you want HF out of our communities. Send a
letter now. ( [link removed] )

CAMPAIGN UPDATE
VICTORY! Forests and Communities Saved
from Destructive Wood Pellet Biomass Project in CA
Thanks to NRDC supporters like you, plans
to build two industrial-scale wood pellet plants in California
have been canceled. This historic victory reflects increasingly
widespread recognition that the biomass industry is a bad bet for
our forests and our communities.
The company behind the project,
Golden State Natural Resources (GSNR), cited the 50,000 comments
they received in opposition to the project — more than 37,000 of
which were sent by NRDC activists — as a key factor in their
decision. Our voices were heard — and heeded.
But the fight’s not over. GSNR will
go back to the drawing board and return with a revised proposal
for public comment. You can be sure we will be calling on NRDC
supporters to again mobilize in full force against industrial
threats to our forests, climate, and communities.

DEEP DIVE
Meet Industry’s Latest Greenwashing Scam:
Chemical Recycling
Corporations claim that plastics can be
recycled by burning them at high temperatures and turning them
into fuel. But the people of Macon, Georgia knew they were wrong
— they successfully made their voices heard opposing a so-called
“chemical recycling” plant proposed by corporate waste giant
Brightmark. It’s Plastic Free July — read more about the dangers
of chemical recycling and how to protect your community > ( [link removed] )
