Peer Recovery Support: What It Is and Why We Need It

While peer support has always been an essential aspect of Twelve Step recovery, “peer recovery specialists” have come to play an increasingly important role in the field. Join Roy Kammer, EdD, dean of the Hazelden Betty Ford Graduate School of Addiction Studies, as he discusses the recent, wider use of peer recovery support: what it is, who’s qualified to provide this type of help and how it impacts outcomes. Carla Fremlin, manager of alumni and recovery support, will describe how Hazelden Betty Ford personalizes recovery management services for individual patients through coaching, web-based resources, transitional and ongoing support, and the use of peer recovery specialists.

About the Presenters
Roy Kammer, EdD
Dean, Hazelden Betty Ford Graduate School of Addiction Studies
A member of the National Addiction Studies Accreditation Commission Advisory Committee and president-elect of the International Coalition for Addiction Studies Education, Kammer has helped establish peer recovery specialist credentialing in Minnesota and is an advocate for developing the peer recovery workforce.

Manager of Alumni and Recovery Support, Hazelden Betty Ford
Fremlin leads Hazelden Betty Ford’s efforts to support alumni in strengthening and sustaining long-term recovery. She directs the organization’s alumni relations and recovery coaching teams across the organization’s national system of care.
