[Everyone deserves access to mental health care]([link removed])
This July, join us in taking action for [National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month]([link removed]).
At the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, we know from research that marginalized groups face a unique set of factors that impact mental health and suicide risk. But we also know from research that suicide can often be prevented, and that culturally competent mental health care can help.
The following mental health and suicide prevention resources focus specifically on supporting historically marginalized and underserved racial and ethnic groups. These resources can be lifesaving. We encourage you to take a look, and share them widely in your communities.
- AFSP has launched a new, Spanish-language website to help spread awareness of suicide prevention, and to deepen resources and support among Spanish-speaking communities. You can learn more about the website in our [news release]([link removed]). []([link removed])
- Watch the [latest episode of Strong Talk]([link removed]), in which Founder and Executive Director of Wellness Action Recovery, Inc., Fonda Bryant, talks about her history with suicidality, and how lived experience has informed her suicide prevention advocacy and education efforts.
- Join [Soul Shop for Black Churches]([link removed]) for a one-day workshop designed to equip leaders of Black faith communities –– such as clergy, staff, lay pastors, and faith-based clinicians –– with resources and guidance needed to foster hope and healing in their communities.
- Attend a presentation of [Talk Saves Lives: An Introduction to Suicide Prevention for Latinx and Hispanic Communities]([link removed]), available in English and Spanish. This presentation addresses the impact of mental health and suicide on Latinx and Hispanic people in the U.S., and guides participants toward culturally competent mental health resources.
- Watch ["Mental Health in Asian American and Pacific Islander Families"]([link removed]), an episode of our Elevating Voices for Long-Lasting Change town hall series. This episode is moderated by AFSP's Chief Medical Officer Dr. Christine Yu Moutier, with panelists Dr. Howard Liu, Dr. Jenny Wang, and Dr. Becky Wong.
- Visit our [Supporting Diverse Communities]([link removed]) webpage to find more stories, resources, and programs that address mental health and suicide prevention in marginalized communities.
In addition to exploring the specific programs and episodes listed above, you can also visit the webpages for [Strong Talk]([link removed]), [Talk Saves Lives]([link removed]), [L.E.T.S. Save Lives]([link removed]), and [Elevating Voices for Long-Lasting Change]([link removed]) to find even more podcast episodes, education programs, and town halls created for and by people of color.
Historically marginalized people deserve to feel safe, cared for, and uplifted –– not just in July, but all year, every year. We hope you join us this month and beyond, in the fight to stop suicide and raise awareness about mental health.
