Severe weather and flood risks

As severe weather becomes more common, with the UK Health Security Agency and Met Office issuing Amber heat-health warnings for London this week ( [link removed] ), Londoners are being urged to be prepared for the risk of flash floods.

In July 2021, heavy rainfall in London caused extensive damage to homes, businesses and transport across the capital.

With latest Environment Agency data showing more than half a million London homes and businesses at high or medium risk, leaflets are being distributed to at-risk properties across London offering guidance to residents about how to prepare for and deal with a flood; including preparation of a "flood kit" of important items in case they have to evacuate their homes, containing warm clothing, a phone charger, any vital medication and important documents, such as proof of insurance.

London Councils' Executive Member for Transport and Environment, Cllr Kieron Williams, said: "The 2021 floods in London were devastating, and it's vital that residents across the city are aware of flood risks to help prevent such widespread disruption and loss in the future."

Do It London at Pride

Do It London ( [link removed] ), The London HIV Prevention Programme's (LHPP) public-facing campaign to make HIV prevention part of everyday life - and help London reach zero new transmissions by 2030 - will be at London Pride this weekend to share messages about  the four proven ways to prevent HIV: testing regularly, using condoms, taking PrEP and knowing that Undetectable = Untransmittable.

Marc Thompson, Lead Commissioner, London HIV Prevention Programme said: “I’m proud that Do It London continues to serve all Londoners -loudly, proudly and with purpose. This campaign is about more than awareness. It’s about action. It’s about making sure every person in every borough knows how to protect themselves and others. And it’s about ending new HIV transmissions in London by 2030. We can do this—but only if we do it together.”

TfL consultation on proposal to close Capital Call scheme

A consultation has been launched on the future of the Capital Call scheme.

TfL are proposing to close Capital Call, an assisted transport service that was set up in 2003 to supplement Taxicard, which is a subsidised taxi and minicab service for people who have difficulty using public transport.

Capital Call is available to Taxicard members (who registered before 2015) who live in 10 London borough where there’s historically been a shortage of available taxis.

Over time, the availability of taxis in all areas of London has increased and both Taxicard and Dial-a-Ride have developed sufficient capacity for all Capital Call journeys, so there isn’t the same case now to operate the service as there was in 2003.

By closing Capital Call, funding into other assisted transport services, including Dial-a-Ride, can be increased. The savings can also be used to further promote these services, and ensure more people are aware of them and can use them.

You can read more about the proposed changes and respond to the consultation here ( [link removed] ). If you cannot submit a response online, or would prefer not to, you can do so:
