Honoring the strength of those we serve

Dear Friend,

It’s World Refugee Day. Today we honor the millions of vulnerable people around the world in search of a better life—a life of dignity, peace, and opportunity.

This week, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees announced that the global total of refugees hit the highest number since the statistics have been collected - nearly 80 million people worldwide are now displaced by war, persecution, conflict, and other emergencies.

I think we can all agree that 2020 has been a year like no other. This year’s World Refugee Day also takes place against a backdrop of both a global pandemic and protests worldwide against racial injustice. Both issues deeply affect the people we work with at USCRI.

Today we choose to focus on hope. Here is a story from Teklewoini, a refugee from Eritrea, whom we assisted in Des Moines, IA:

"USCRI gave me a home, helped me find a job, helped me with rent, and took me shopping. I am going to school now and will graduate with my GED soon. My case worker is my friend and USCRI is everything to me.

This photo is me at my first job in the U.S.–the best part was that I learned to cook more than 350 dishes! I hope to open my own East African restaurant in Des Moines someday.”

The refugees we serve inspire us through their determination, their hard work, their unrelenting focus on protecting their children, and their courage. It’s not easy to leave the only home you’ve ever known and begin a new life with nothing. We’re proud to stand by their side.

Your gift today can make all the difference for a family building a new life like Teklewoini’s. Thank you for standing with us.

Best regards,

Eskinder Negash
President and Chief Executive Officer
