Friends,

The Emancipation Proclamation was issued on January 1st, 1863 — but it wasn’t until June 19th, 1865 that the very last group of African Americans in Texas learned they were free. Today, we commemorate Juneteenth to celebrate the end of slavery in the United States and remind ourselves of the constant struggle to make real our national promise that all Americans have an equal opportunity to pursue happiness.

Although we won’t be celebrating in the usual way this year, we do enjoy a historically unique opportunity to collaborate to create real change in our society.

From ensuring that all people have access to affordable housing to giving every child a quality public education regardless of their zip code, to tackling the issues that disproportionately affect Black women and girls — I have been and always will be committed to lifting up Black America, today and every day until we fulfill the potential of our great nation.

As we celebrate the end of the heinous system of slavery and contemplate the battles yet to be won, I can’t help but reflect on how far we’ve come. And no matter how hard Donald Trump tries to bring America back to its shameful racist roots, no matter how hard he tries to fan the flames of hatred and division — we will not go backward.

I am proud to be a Black woman — the only Black woman in the New York Congressional Delegation, in fact — and I am proud to serve my country in Congress.

I hope you all will allow me the honor of continuing to represent you in 2020 and beyond.

Thank you for standing with me.

Happy Juneteenth,

— Yvette
