The sexual revolution made promises it couldn’t keep, that liberation from traditional morality would bring happiness and release. That was a lie. We thought we could trade our outdated morals for authenticity, but instead we traded self-giving love for shallow indulgence.
We sowed the wind and we reaped the whirlwind. What precisely has the sexual revolution done to us? How has it destroyed our bodies and our souls? How has it offered us pleasure and delivered only pain?
Nathanael Blake, fellow at the Ethics and Public Policy Center, has answers. He explains how the sexual revolution has ruined all that it touched and more besides. Venereal disease, abortion, broken homes, rising depression and anxiety—all are the outcomes of the rejection of a sound culture of sexual ethics bound to the family. This outcome is surprising only to those who believed the founding lie, that a better world lay on the horizon if only we left our Christian ethics behind.
It is the modern cultural paradox: in liberation from tradition, imprisonment to passion; in illicit sexual intimacy, emotional isolation; in relational selfishness, social alienation; in sexual indulgence, sterility; in pleasure, pain.

Blake offers a bleak assessment of the cultural devastation of the sexual revolution, but also a message of hope for a way back to Christian sexual ethics as a better way to love one another and live together. Hope is found in the classic Christian paradox: in crucifixion, there is resurrection; in dying to self, one finds oneself; in giving love, one receives love. Join University Bookman editor Luke Sheahan on June 24 at 7 PM for a conversation with Dr. Blake on the human and social costs of the sexual revolution.
