Letter from the Mayor

Dear Washingtonians,

Summer is officially here, and while school is out, the fun is just getting started at summer programming around the city:

* More than 13,000 teens and young adults will be participating in the Mayor Marion S. Barry Summer Youth Employment Program which begins on Monday.

* Thousands of kids and teens will play and learn with the Department of Parks and Recreation, which is offering over 8,500 summer camp slots.

* Across all eight wards, kids and teens are already enrolled in activities like football clinics [ [link removed] ], field trips [ [link removed] ], and the Junior Lifeguard Academy [ [link removed] ].

* The DC Public Library is hosting its Discover Summer [ [link removed] ] series with hundreds of free events through August 31, from author talks and museum partnerships to creative workshops and prize giveaways.

* DCPS Summer Learning [ [link removed] ] programs will combine STEAM, academic support, and outdoor adventures.

* On Friday evenings, teens can hang out and have fun at DPR’s Late Night Hype [ [link removed] ] and Late Night Drip [ [link removed] ], weekly events with music, games, and extended pool and recreation center hours.

Additionally, the DC Youth Meals Program, which ensures children and teens have access to healthy, free meals throughout the summer, begins meal service on Monday, June 23 and will operate through Sunday, August 24. You can learn more about summer meal sites and other summer events at summer.dc.gov [ [link removed] ].

Of course, with the summer also comes the heat, and we are anticipating some very hot weather as we head into next week. During extreme heat, please be mindful of how much time you spend outside, stay hydrated, make sure to check on seniors and vulnerable neighbors, and call the shelter hotline at 202-399-7093 or 311 for unsheltered residents in need of free, accessible transportation to a low-barrier shelter or day center. Cooling centers will be open across the city, and starting tomorrow, outdoor pools [ [link removed] ] will be open six days a week and spray parks [ [link removed] ] will be open daily.

Sincerely,

Muriel Bowser
