June 20, 2025
Dear Washingtonians,
Summer is officially here, and while school is out, the fun is just getting started at summer programming around the city:
-
More than 13,000 teens and young adults will be participating in the Mayor Marion S. Barry Summer Youth Employment Program which begins on Monday.
-
Thousands of kids and teens will play and learn with the Department of Parks and Recreation, which is offering over 8,500 summer camp slots.
-
The DC Public Library is hosting its Discover Summer series with hundreds of free events through August 31, from author talks and museum partnerships to creative workshops and prize giveaways.
-
On Friday evenings, teens can hang out and have fun at DPR’s Late Night Hype and Late Night Drip, weekly events with music, games, and extended pool and recreation center hours.
Additionally, the DC Youth Meals Program, which ensures children and teens have access to healthy, free meals throughout the summer, begins meal service on Monday, June 23 and will operate through Sunday, August 24. You can learn more about summer meal sites and other summer events at summer.dc.gov.
Of course, with the summer also comes the heat, and we are anticipating some very hot weather as we head into next week. During extreme heat, please be mindful of how much time you spend outside, stay hydrated, make sure to check on seniors and vulnerable neighbors, and call the shelter hotline at 202-399-7093 or 311 for unsheltered residents in need of free, accessible transportation to a low-barrier shelter or day center. Cooling centers will be open across the city, and starting tomorrow, outdoor pools will be open six days a week and spray parks will be open daily.
The Department of Parks and Recreation’s new Rec for All Play It Forward Scholarship will provide scholarships in amounts up to $5,000 to 40 young DC residents. To qualify, applicants must have attained a high school diploma or equivalent, participated in a DPR sports program, and enrolled in post-secondary education.
