“You are moving in the direction of freedom, and the function of freedom is to free somebody else.”
These words, spoken by Nobel Prize-winning author Toni Morrison at a commencement speech in 1979, masterfully captured the essence of freedom – the essence of what Juneteenth (June 19) is. Every single one of us, regardless of race, ethnicity, or national origin, moves in the direction of freedom in partnership with volunteers, communities, and the environment we protect.

Dear Friend,
Sierra Club’s Black Action Team and the Outdoors for All Campaign invite you to join us in celebrating freedom by personally joining in community Juneteenth celebrations, honoring the lands and waterways that carried us to freedom, and taking action to protect this history.
Our communities face unprecedented attacks from the current administration. By protecting our parks and public lands – and the stories they contain of leaders such as Harriet Tubman, we can create the connections required to withstand any attempts to oppress us.
Tell the Department of the Interior to stop erasing history at our national parks and historic sites.
Take action

We stood together to defend public lands, demanded due process for migrant communities, and protested a government shifting towards tyranny during the “No Kings” protests of last week. This Juneteenth, we hope you will recommit to restoring freedom and remembering our full history.
Help protect what connects us!
