"You are moving in the direction of freedom, and the function of freedom is to free somebody else."
These words, spoken by Nobel Prize-winning author Toni Morrison at a commencement speech in 1979, masterfully captured the essence of freedom – the essence of what Juneteenth (June 19) is. Every single one of us, regardless of race, ethnicity, or national origin, moves in the direction of freedom in partnership with volunteers, communities, and the environment we protect.
Dear Friend,
Sierra Club's Black Action Team and the Outdoors for All Campaign invite you to celebrate freedom by personally joining in community Juneteenth celebrations, honoring the lands and waterways that carried us to freedom, and taking action to protect this history.
Our communities face unprecedented attacks from the current administration. By protecting our parks and public lands – and the stories they contain of leaders such as Harriet Tubman, we can create the connections required to withstand any attempts to oppress us. |
