Donald Trump has declared war on the free press for one reason: Because he knows that killing independent journalism is a key step towards dismantling democracy.

We've seen him attack NPR, PBS, the AP, and countless other news outlets — and it's only a matter of time before the administration comes after nonprofit news outlets like Common Dreams as well.

In fact, they've already tipped their hand for how they'll do it.

Republicans in the House have repeatedly passed legislation known as the "nonprofit killer bill," which would allow Trump to crush nonprofit news outlets like Common Dreams with a stroke of a pen.

It's almost inevitable that this bill will be back, perhaps as part of the final version of Trump's "One Big Beautiful Bill," which also includes a whopping $50 billion tax increase on nonprofits.

And then there are Trump's barrage of defamation lawsuits, which have led to multi-million dollar settlements that would absolutely bankrupt Common Dreams.

Let's be clear: We will not back down from this president — or any elected leader — ever. And we'll use every legal tool at our disposal to fight back if he comes after us.

But in the face of these very real threats, we're counting on our readers to provide the ongoing financial backing we need to take on these fights and win.
