Friends — Today the Supreme Court upheld DACA. I cannot overstate the importance of this decision.

Providing DACA recipients with the legal protections that all Americans should rightfully enjoy has allowed them to come out of shadows, engage more freely in the economy, and improve the communities we all live in.

As the daughter of immigrants, I have seen first hand the impact that stability and safety can have on a community and have fought tirelessly to protect Dreamers. DACA recipients have proven that when given the opportunity, they will exceed all of our expectations.

With these protections, DACA recipients have more fully realized the American Dream, driven by the promise that they will not be unduly expelled from the only place they have ever known as home.

While I am pleased that the Supreme Court made the right decision and upheld the rights of DACA recipients, we cannot get complacent. This decision provides temporary protection, but it also gives this administration a roadmap to undermine DACA moving forward.

Though DACA provides many protections, it does not confer all of the benefits of citizenship, meaning there is still work to be done. The current administration has made clear that they intend on exploiting any divisions they can in order to drive up their support in a polarized, base election. As the unrest in the streets have made clear, our nation is currently in the midst of a battle for our national identity.

From now to November, we have the opportunity to redefine what it means to be an American or allow our nation to slide back into the dark recesses of our past. Let this win provide some of the foundation for a renewed Rainbow Coalition that will work together to defeat Trump come November.
