Conflict and poverty have denied many in South Sudan the chance to learn, especially women.

“I didn’t know much before because I couldn’t read,” says Santina.

Santina lives with a disability and has never been to school. Like more than 70% of women in South Sudan, Santina was illiterate, and she struggled to advocate for herself.

But, in 2024, a new chapter began in Santina’s life when she joined AE’s Improved Literacy Program.

Run in partnership with the local church, the program equips South Sudanese women with basic reading and writing skills, helping them unlock access to knowledge, education and economic opportunities.

Santina reflects,
“Now, I can read and write because of the learning program.”
