Dear friends,
Over the weekend, Gov. Colyer and a coalition of lawmakers were on the ground in Pratt, Reno, and Stafford counties to meet with families who were in the path of the one-mile wide F-3 tornado with 155mph winds.
The destruction was staggering. Many families lost their homes and their livelihoods.
Irrigation systems twisted and torn from the ground.
Oil rigs toppled.
Farm equipment tossed like toys.
Semi-trailers wrapped around trees.

But more than anything, what stood out was the resilience of Kansans. The Kansas way isn’t just a saying, it is a way of life.
The most shocking part of it all was the fact that Gov. Kelly and her administration have failed their fellow Kansans.
In what I’m sure is no surprise to many, Gov. Kelly and her administration cronies have yet to visit, or declare a State of Emergency to open up doors for their neighbors.
Once an emergency has been declared by the Governor, those who found themselves in the path of the massive wedge tornado would have immediate access to much needed assistance.
This is why Gov. Colyer, joined by State Senator Michael Murphy and State Representatives Kyle Hoffman, Kevin Schwertfeger, Joe Seiwert, Brett Fairchild, Jim Minnix, and Samantha Parshall have called on Gov. Kelly to visit these communities, see the destruction first hand, and finally show a little leadership by granting the requests already submitted by the counties by declaring a state of emergency.

The request by Gov. Colyer and Lawmakers includes the following immediate actions:
* Declare a state disaster for Gove, Reno, Pratt, and Stafford Counties;
* Deploy mobile workforce centers to support workers and employers affected by the storms;
* Activate the Kansas National Guard to assist with clearing debris and environmental hazards;
* Suspend certain regulations temporarily to speed up cleanup and rebuilding, including those affecting disposal, permitting, and temporary housing;
* Provide emergency housing resources for displaced residents; and,
* Promote use of property tax relief authorized under K.S.A. 79-1613, which allows homeowners to apply for tax abatement or credits if their home and outbuildings are destroyed or substantially damaged in a disaster.
“This is a moment for leadership and compassion,” said Gov. Jeff Colyer. “Our neighbors are hurting. I’ve walked their shattered fields and seen the wreckage of a lifetime—generations of work destroyed. It’s time for the state to step up—not with red tape, but with real help.”
Thankfully, no lives were lost - many credit this on Pratt County Emergency Services for providing a livestream of severe weather on their facebook page.
Farming operations were destroyed. Homes were completely gone.
Plevna Bible Church Parsonage destroyed and Church roof damaged.
Livelihoods that have been generations in the making destroyed in seconds.
What was not even remotely destroyed was the resilience of our fellow Kansans. Communities pulled together. In Plevna, Mayor Hand made sure that residents had the immediate supplies they needed - food, water, first aid kits, toiletries, etc.
Just North East of Plevna, a family farm was devastated. Large cattle stock trailers in parts. Everything was destroyed.
The damage was unimaginable, but the way the communities have pulled together in the worst of times to lend a hand and help one another - that is the Kansas way.
This is why Gov. Colyer and lawmakers are calling on Gov. Kelly to roll up her sleeves, lend a hand, and declare an emergency.
For Kansas,
Team Colyer
