Cutting the ribbon to celebrate new green space at Short Ave. Elementary

Dear friends and partners,

The end of the school year is in sight, and we have been busy celebrating our students, staff, and school communities as we prepare for the future in LAUSD. Last week, we cut the ribbon on Short Ave. Elementary’s new green space—one of the many greening projects underway in my district ([link removed]) . I have also been grateful for all the recent opportunities to recognize the achievements of our wonderful teachers, classified staff, District partners—and the students who thrive because of their hard work and dedication ([link removed]) .

As we invest in the success of our school communities, the Board recently met to discuss the District’s long-term financial health ahead of our upcoming vote to approve next year’s budget. I will continue to advocate for a more transparent, student-centered, and data-driven process as we confront the impacts of declining enrollment and a looming state deficit.

Finally, in the Palisades, we have begun installation of portable classrooms and world-class air quality monitoring systems as the next phase to safely bring students from two fire-damaged schools back to their campuses as soon as the Fall semester ([link removed]) . The school year is almost over, but our work continues to ensure that every student has the ability to learn and thrive in LAUSD.

Onward,

In the Community: The Latest from Board District 4

Over the past few weeks, my team and I were thrilled to cut the ribbon on Short Ave ES’s new green space, tour the new portable bungalows at Pali High, check in at Brentwood Science’s school community park, and celebrate our incredible classified employees—complete with LAUSD’s famous coffee cake. We also visited classrooms at ICEF Vista, Newcastle ES, Reseda ES, Emelita ES, and Fairburn ES, shadowed one of our Classified Employees of the Year at Venice Skills Center, met with a delegation of Finnish educators and civic leaders to share ideas on classroom technology, hosted our final Youth Advisory Council of the year with a student-led culinary experience at SOCES, and honored outstanding educators at the annual Westchester/Playa Eddy Awards!

In the Spotlight: BD4's Own Allison Holdorff Wins a WAVE Award!

Every year, the Venice Chamber's WAVE Awards celebrate educational excellence and character-building in the Venice community. This year, the evening’s highest honor—the Joëlle Award for Excellence in Education—was presented to Allison Holdorff Polhill, Board District 4's own Senior Advisor and District Director. The award, named in memory of Joëlle Dumas, founder of Ecole Claire Fontaine, honors extraordinary contributions to education. After losing her own home in the Palisades Fire earlier this year, Allison did not skip a beat in supporting the families who were also displaced and the school communities that had to be temporarily relocated. She is a fierce advocate for the kids, families, and school communities of our district, and we are lucky to have her on our team!
