JUFJ: new DC paid leave regs don't cover all workers
Last month, DC started collecting taxes for paid family and medical leave. Last week, key regulations were published that will decide who gets access to paid leave next year, when the program starts. But, [link removed] reports Jews United for Justice, there's a serious problem with the regulations. "Under these regs, tens of thousands of workers, especially low-income women of color, may not be able to access paid family leave," says JUFJ DC Campaigns Manager Joanna Blotner. "This is not the universal paid leave that we fought hard to pass in 2016," says Blotner. [link removed] Click here now to write to the Office of Paid Family Leave and let them know that the Universal Paid Leave Act should be truly universal. "Let's roll up our sleeves and get to work now so that we can all access our leave next year," says Blotner.
Working While Black Exposition this weekend
The National Black Worker Center's first annual [link removed] Working While Black Exposition will take place this weekend. Featuring dynamic speakers, vendors, an apprenticeship fair and a film festival, the Exposition aims to educate Black workers, share innovative approaches to mobilization and organizing, and promote Black progress. "Together we will become informed, engaged and enlightened, so that we can build our personal power and effect real change in our communities," say organizers. The Exposition is August 24th and 25th at Coppin State University in Baltimore, MD.
Raising the stakes at CSA golf tourney
East West Lincoln just raised the stakes at this year's Community Services Agency golf tournament. The local dealership "is excited to sponsor the vehicle for this year's tournament for the lucky player who hits a hole-in-one," says Nathan Gray, Sr. of East West Lincoln. "We value CSA's mission to improve the lives of working people and are proud that East West Lincoln's participation will help advance that mission." The tournament raises funds for CSA's Emergency Assistance Program. The tournament is set for Monday, September 23 at the Enterprise Golf Course in Prince Georges County, MD. "American Factory" released on Netflix today
Cultures collide. Hope survives. When a Chinese billionaire re-opens a factory and hires two thousand blue-collar Americans, early days of hope and optimism give way to setbacks as high-tech China clashes with working-class America. That's the story explored in American Factory, a gripping new film released on Netflix today.
With precision and astonishing access, directors Julia Reichert and Steven Bognar capture every key moment in this high-stakes intercultural chess game, revealing how American and Chinese workers view themselves within systems of authority. What results is an epic masterwork about the future of American labor and Chinese economic dominance, all within the confines of a factory in Ohio.
