The House just passed the so-called SAVE Act — a bill that would require documentary proof of citizenship to register to vote.

It sounds reasonable to some on the surface. But in practice, it would be a catastrophic blow to voting rights across this country.

Let me be clear:

🛑 There is no evidence of widespread noncitizen voting. In Minnesota, there were 3 cases out of 13.4 million ballots cast in 10 years.

🛑 This law could block millions of eligible Americans from registering to vote , especially students, seniors, low-income voters, and women.

🛑 We’ve seen the results before. In Kansas, 31,000 eligible citizens were shut out of voting due to a similar law.

This bill isn’t about security. It’s about exclusion.

I’m proud of Minnesota’s system. We are first in America in youth turnout and second in overall turnout. That’s not by accident. It’s because we’ve struck the right balance between security and accessibility.

But if this bill becomes law, it would upend election systems nationwide, imposing chaos, cost, and confusion. And alarmingly, it even threatens criminal penalties f or local election officials simply doing their jobs.

I won’t stop sounding the alarm. We’ve already joined a coalition of states to fight President Trump’s executive order in court. And now we need to stop the SAVE Act before it does irreversible damage to our democracy.
