I didn’t start speaking until about age 7, and because of that, I struggled as a student. I ended up going to college, but I couldn’t get a job in the midst of the Great Recession.

I heard countless times in my life that I’d “never amount to anything” and for a long time, I believed it.

But things started to turn around for me when I began organizing in my community.

I mobilized my community around issues like raising the minimum wage and ending cash bail, and I saw firsthand how powerful we are when we all stand together.

Flash forward to today, and I’m the state Senator holding the seat that Barack Obama once held, and I’m leading the fight in the Illinois Senate to make our state and our society more fair to working people.

John, the only reason I got to where I am today is because of my community. And now, I’m ready to bring our community to Congress and serve as a fearless advocate for kids like me.
