Folks,

These past few weeks have been difficult, transformational, inspiring, and illuminating. I have been proud to see our city come together to demand justice for not only George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, but for Black Americans across the nation.

While we stand, chant, march, and mourn, we must also envision the change we want to see. That change begins with moving our money away from institutions that harm our communities, like the police, and into schools, social programs, mental healthcare, and community-based initiatives that truly make us safer.

If you are with me, will you join me in calling on elected leaders across America to divest from the police and invest in our communities instead?

I have called for officers who abuse their power to be fired, attended peaceful protests, and co-sponsored the Justice in Policing Act. But the truth is, racial injustice in this country is endemic and institutional.

We have seen NYPD officers attack civilians on video, ram protestors with police vehicles, and arrest legal observers en masse. And we must not forget, this is the same NYPD that murdered Eric Garner, Sean Bell, and Amadou Diallo, and jailed thousands of Black and Brown New Yorkers through broken windows policing and its racist stop-and-frisk program.

It is time to do more than speak up. Will you join me in asking our elected leaders to move our money away from police and into our communities?

In service,

— Yvette
