Email from Rep. Miller-Meeks Miller-Meeks Weekly Script May 11th, 2025 WEEKLY SC℞IPT View as Webpage Rep. Miller-Meeks: Happy Mother's Day! This Mother’s Day, I want to take a moment to thank the women who make everything possible—our moms. From the early mornings to the long nights, from the small acts of kindness to the sacrifices no one sees, Iowa moms are the backbone of our families, our communities, and our state. As a mom to two wonderful kids, Jonathon and Taylor, I know firsthand the joy, worry, and fierce love that comes with the job. No title I’ve held in medicine, the military, or Congress compares to the pride I feel being their mother. It’s the most important role I’ve ever had—and one I carry with me every day. This week, we also celebrated Military Spouse Appreciation Day. As a veteran myself, I know the quiet strength and resilience it takes to hold down the home front. My husband Curt, also an Army veteran, has been my rock. I’m incredibly grateful for his love, support, and steady presence through every season of life. I also want to recognize the incredible military mothers in my life—my mom, who taught me discipline, compassion, and a love of reading; my mother-in-law, who entrusted me with her oldest son, now my husband; and one of my sisters, whose dedication to her family and her husband’s Air Force career (she herself is also an Air Force veteran) helped build a strong, resilient family through every challenge military life brings. May is Military Appreciation Month, and it’s a reminder that behind every uniform is a family, often led by a mom holding it all together. Whether it’s helping with homework while balancing a job, managing the home while a spouse is deployed, or simply showing up with unwavering love, Iowa moms do it all. To every mother in Iowa’s First District and around the country: thank you. Thank you for your strength, your selflessness, and the love you pour into your families and communities. You are the heart of this country, and you deserve to be celebrated—not just today, but every day. Happy Mother’s Day. The Weekly Wrap The Weekly Wrap from Washington DC! Representing Iowa's First District Proud to join Iowa Lt. Governor Cournoyer for the grand opening of the North Scott Community Regional Innovation Center in Eldridge! I secured $2 million in federal funding to help bring this state-of-the-art facility to life—a major investment in our students, our economy, and Iowa’s future. Great to join students at Bettendorf High School for a thoughtful Q&A on the issues that matter: balancing the budget, funding veterans’ services, and securing a stronger future for the next generation. Grateful to Ms. Koepnick and Ms. Ahrens for the invitation and for encouraging civic engagement in the classroom! It was a tremendous honor to join President Donald J. Trump and First Lady Melania Trump at the White House to celebrate Military Moms—especially meaningful to me as an Army veteran, as we honor the strength and sacrifice of those who serve and those who raise them. It was also great meeting White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt! Great meeting with the Iowa Hospital Association and leaders from Knoxville Hospital & Clinics, MercyOne Genesis, and University of Iowa Health Care to discuss how we can improve access to care and better serve patients across Iowa. The House passed H.R. 276 to officially rename the Gulf as the Gulf of America. No nation has invested more in securing, protecting, and powering this region than the United States. This name reflects the truth: the Gulf is American, and it helps drives our energy future. Great to meet with small business leaders from the National Association of Tower Erectors. These are the folks building the infrastructure that keeps us all connected. We had a great discussion on workforce challenges and supporting the backbone of America’s communications future. Great to meet with Constellation Energy team members from the Quad Cities, where their plant helps keep our region powered. We discussed the future of nuclear energy, the need for workforce development, and why protecting reliable baseload power is critical to America’s energy security. Great to meet with physicians from my district during the American College of Rheumatology Advocacy and Leadership Conference in DC. We discussed improving access to care in Iowa and the urgent need to lower drug prices and rein in PBMs through my DRUG Act. Had a great visit to Eaton Mission Systems in Davenport, home to 800 good-paying jobs and world-class defense manufacturing. From air refueling equipment to oxygen systems and regulators (I believe used by Tom Cruise in Top Gun Maverick) to advanced restraints for our military, this facility plays a key role in keeping America strong and secure. Committee Hearings I’m proud to lead H.R. 1969, the No Wrong Door for Veterans Act. It reauthorizes the Fox Grant Program to expand access to life-saving mental health care, and ensures amputee veterans get the athletic prosthetics they need to stay strong, active, and healthy. This bill has now passed out of the veterans Affairs Committee. Floor Speeches I was proud to honor small businesses across Iowa for National Small Business Week! I am committed to extending the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act and ensuring more of what you earn stays where it belongs: in your pockets. As a former Nurse myself, I was proud to celebrate National Nurses Day on the House Floor! I honored the life and legacy of Simpson College President Jay Byers on the House Floor.
