This Mother’s Day, I want to take a moment to thank the women who make everything possible—our moms. From the early mornings to the long nights, from the small acts of kindness to the sacrifices no one sees, Iowa moms are the backbone of our families, our communities, and our state.
As a mom to two wonderful kids, Jonathon and Taylor, I know firsthand the joy, worry, and fierce love that comes with the job. No title I’ve held in medicine, the military, or Congress compares to the pride I feel being their mother. It’s the most important role I’ve ever had—and one I carry with me every day.
This week, we also celebrated Military Spouse Appreciation Day. As a veteran myself, I know the quiet strength and resilience it takes to hold down the home front. My husband Curt, also an Army veteran, has been my rock. I’m incredibly grateful for his love, support, and steady presence through every season of life.
I also want to recognize the incredible military mothers in my life—my mom, who taught me discipline, compassion, and a love of reading; my mother-in-law, who entrusted me with her oldest son, now my husband; and one of my sisters, whose dedication to her family and her husband’s Air Force career (she herself is also an Air Force veteran) helped build a strong, resilient family through every challenge military life brings.
May is Military Appreciation Month, and it’s a reminder that behind every uniform is a family, often led by a mom holding it all together. Whether it’s helping with homework while balancing a job, managing the home while a spouse is deployed, or simply showing up with unwavering love, Iowa moms do it all.
To every mother in Iowa’s First District and around the country: thank you. Thank you for your strength, your selflessness, and the love you pour into your families and communities. You are the heart of this country, and you deserve to be celebrated—not just today, but every day.
Happy Mother’s Day.
