ACTION SPOTLIGHT
A Second Chance To Defend Monarch
Butterflies
NRDC activists submitted over 25,000
public comments to support a Biden-era proposal to protect
monarch butterflies and their habitat. Now the current
administration has reopened the comment period, likely to allow
more time for our opponents to submit comments that aim to
undermine protections for monarchs — and we need you to make your
voice heard again.
Monarchs have long been threatened by habitat loss, climate
change, and pesticides like glyphosate and neonics — the same
culprits responsible for the alarming declines of bees and other
pollinators and threatening our food supply and our health. They
need our help now.
Help show the Trump administration that
there’s overwhelming public support for protecting monarchs:
Submit your public comment by the May 19 deadline. ( [link removed] )

CAMPAIGN UPDATE
New Report: Toxins in Dollar Store
Products Pose Risks to Kids
New research from the Campaign for
Healthier Solutions (CHS) in partnership with NRDC found that
some children’s products sold at stores like Dollar General and
Dollar Tree contain dangerous chemicals linked to cancer,
reproductive harm, and learning disabilities.
The report, titled "Product Testing for the People" and fittingly
published the week of Mother's Day, emphasized that children and
pregnant people are at particularly high risk from these everyday
products: researchers found baby lotion containing a
formaldehyde-releasing chemical, toys with PVC, and candy pails
with lead.
In general, dollar stores predominantly serve communities of
color and low-income communities that are already
disproportionately exposed to chemical hazards and health effects
linked to chemical exposures.
NRDC is partnering with CHS to get
toxic products off dollar store shelves — and you can help. Tell
dollar store executives: stop selling toxic products and protect
children from harm. ( [link removed] )

LITIGATION UPDATE
We Tend to Disagree with Perkins Coie in
Court — but Now, We Stand with Them
In a brief filed in federal court by NRDC
and other nonprofit groups, we stand with the law firm Perkins
Coie and against President Trump’s illegal efforts to stifle
First Amendment rights. Perkins Coie, like every one of us, has a
constitutional right to challenge any administration, free from
fear of governmental retribution. At NRDC, we sue presidents and
administrations of both parties if they violate laws that protect
our environment and health. Read more > ( [link removed] )

DEEP DIVE
Can the Environmental Justice Movement
Survive the Administration’s Attacks?
Though NRDC’s Matthew Tejada acknowledges
that “how much devastation we'll have to recover from, how much
destruction we're going to have to rebuild from, is yet to be
seen,” he is adamant that “we will recover. We will rebuild. It
will be better.” Even as the administration seems set on giving
polluters a free pass, Tejada — NRDC’s senior vice president for
environmental health who also spent over a decade as the head of
the EPA’s environmental justice office — says the environmental
justice wins achieved in recent years motivate him and fellow
advocates to keep up the fight. Read more > ( [link removed] )
