Last Saturday, San Antonio held its first open mayoral election in 16 years with 27 candidates on the ballot.
The clear frontrunner? Gina Ortiz Jones. A veteran, a former Air Force intelligence officer, and the second-highest-ranking civilian in the U.S. Air Force under President Biden.
Gina led the field, but since no one crossed the 50% threshold, she now advances to a runoff on June 7 against Rolando Pablos, a Republican operative with deep ties to Governor Greg Abbott, who appointed him Secretary of State.
John, this race may be local, but the consequences aren’t.
San Antonio is the 7th most populous city in the country, with a population greater than that of 11 states. With the city council likely to become more conservative, this election is critical for Democrats to win.
