Dear John,
In Congress early this morning, the House Natural Resources Committee passed its Committee Budget Reconciliation bill, a mega bill described by Ranking Committee Member Jared Huffman as “ the most extreme, anti-environment bill in American history,” that “turns our environment into an industrial sacrifice.”
This bill, meant to save or generate revenue for the Federal Government in areas under the purview of the Natural Resources Committee — including public lands, mining, timber, environmental protection etc —relies on opening our nation’s most special places to the most harmfu,l industries, slashing environmental reviews and processes along the way.

The Boundary Waters is in the crosshairs of this dangerous legislation. This bill includes language that would:
* Overturn the 20-year copper mining ban in the headwaters of the Boundary Waters
* Reinstate previously invalidated Twin Metals mineral leases under highly favorable terms, including perpetual rights of renewal, and order issuance of two additional mineral leases that include perpetual rights to renew the leases , with no public process or environmental review,
* Override the Forest Service’s right to deny consent to mineral leases in National Forests in Minnesota, and
* Prohibit judicial review (unless of course the company with the lease has an issue).

Remember: If sulfide-ore copper mining is allowed to pollute this pristine Wilderness, the damage will be permanent —lasting for generations. There is no second chance . No clean-up that can truly restore what’s lost. That’s why we must stand and fight now , before it's too late.
The future of the Boundary Waters depends on what we do in this moment. So let’s make it count! [[link removed]]
