According to the 19th News, legislators in Georgia, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Missouri, South Carolina, and Texas, most of which already have total abortion bans in place, have introduced legislation that would impose extreme criminal penalties on both providers and patients. The worst part? Many of the states considering these bills still sometimes issue the death penalty to defendants who are found guilty of homicide.

We are sounding the alarm: Draconian bills like this are becoming more popular in deep red states; states in which men account for more than 80% of the legislators weighing in on these policies. In Georgia, lawmakers heard hours of testimony on one of these homicide bills, and it even drew criticism from those who support abortion restrictions. As Elizabeth Edmonds, an anti-abortion lobbyist, stated, “This is a bad bill. It’s bad for women.” Despite this opposition, the bill garnered 21 sponsors in Georgia’s state legislature – the most support it has ever had.

Pregnancy criminalization has been on the rise. In a recent report by Pregnancy Justice, they found that at least 210 pregnant women have faced pregnancy-related criminal charges since the fall of Roe v. Wade, and that number is only going to continue to go up.

We are outraged by the audacity of male politicians writing laws about our bodies. There is only ONE way to fight back against these extremists: making sure there are pro-choice, pro-women women in all of the rooms when decisions about our bodies are being made.
