Today is all about standing tall for giraffes. You only need to look into the eyes of these gentle giants to feel a connection – yet brutal trophy hunters can look into those same eyes, and take aim to end their life.
Why are giraffes special?
Giraffes are special in so many ways!
With their long, elegant limbs and necks, they’re described by our Founder Patron Dame Joanna Lumley as: “a fairytale animal, as if from the land of fables”.
Known as a ‘keystone species’, giraffes help maintain their ecosystem. They browse and ‘prune’ plants and trees, distributing nutrients and seeds through their dung.

Who could hurt or kill a giraffe?!
The earth’s tallest animal is in deep trouble. Giraffe populations are plummeting.
Already under threat from habitat loss and climate change, individuals are being illegally shot, speared or suffering a lingering death in a lethal wire snare – killed for their meat, skins and even their tails.
But that’s not all. Unbelievably to animal lovers like us, giraffes are also legally hunted for ‘sport’.
Giraffes are in crisis, and today, fewer than 70,000 cling to survival. They are officially ‘Vulnerable to extinction’.
