The earth’s tallest animal is in deep trouble. Giraffe populations are plummeting. Already under threat from habitat loss and climate change, individuals are being illegally shot, speared or suffering a lingering death in a lethal wire snare – killed for their meat, skins and even their tails. But that’s not all. Unbelievably to animal lovers like us, giraffes are also legally hunted for ‘sport’. Giraffes are in crisis, and today, fewer than 70,000 cling to survival. They are officially ‘Vulnerable to extinction’.
