"The next thing I knew, my body was in the air—then on the ground. My vision went black, and I was stomped and kicked by steel-toed boots all over my body. Tear gas filled my lungs. I woke up bruised and with a gun held to my head. I was later told that after they stomped me, those police officers tear-gassed both myself and the woman I was trying to help directly.”
Today Elle Magazine published my account of what it was like organizing during the Ferguson Uprising and how it’s informed my candidacy. What we are experiencing right now isn’t a moment—it’s a movement. Our experiences on the streets right here in Missouri’s 1st District have never been more relevant, and once again people all over the country—and all over the world—are watching us.
The media is finally paying attention to our race, which we welcome as we strive to get our message out to every voter. Unfortunately, that means our opponents will also be watching more closely than ever.
When they see the momentum our campaign is building, we can be sure they’re going to throw everything they have at us, and their pockets are DEEP. To continue to compete, we need to raise thousands of small dollars donations between now and Election Day. Will you help us keep the momentum going and give today?
Like I said in my piece:
"We need activists in Congress—not just one, or two, or ten, but an entire generation of activists. We have been through so much. We can’t quit. We can't slow down. Now is not the time for incremental change. Incremental change means more people will die.”
