Today, we want to shine a spotlight on maybe the most magnificent of Africa’s wild animals - the lion! Iconic and majestic, but at real risk of extinction; lions urgently need your help.
Why lions are special
As you know, of all species, the lion is deeply significant to Born Free. We feature Elsa the lioness on our logo – her journey to freedom inspires everything our charity does. The only social big cat, the powerful lion is a potent symbol of freedom and Africa’s vast savannah grasslands.
As top predators, lions have a vital role helping their ecosystem stay in balance, benefitting wildlife and people.

Why lions are at risk
You’ll be horrified but, every year, hundreds of lions (already under threat from habitat loss and ‘conflict’ with local people) and other big cats are hunted for ‘sport’. Shameless trophy hunters then post gruesome photos online – posing for selfies next to bloody corpses.
Today, as few as 23,000 lions cling to survival. Officially ‘Vulnerable to extinction’, could this be the lion’s last roar?
