Trump’s reckless tariffs are already causing worldwide economic insecurity and hurting everyday people. At a time when too many people are already struggling with high grocery prices, the last thing we need is a wave of reckless, arbitrary tariffs that will drive up prices for consumers, hurt small and mid-sized farmers, and even further disrupt global trade.

Tariffs can be a useful policy for creating domestic jobs and defending labor rights across borders — but tariffs only work when they’re paired with policies at home that grow U.S. industries, and when they are carefully targeted.

That’s not what Trump is doing at all.

Trump’s across-the-board approach will lead to higher prices for everyday people, especially for goods that simply can’t be produced at scale in the U.S. — like bananas and coffee. Even worse, Trump’s reckless behavior is creating a trade war, with other countries placing tariffs on U.S. goods. This could spell disaster for small and mid-sized farms and other small businesses.

Meanwhile, Trump is using the threat of tariffs to push for more U.S. fossil fuel exports — especially fracked gas. If Congress doesn’t act now, the damage could be even worse.

Yesterday, under increasing pressure, Trump surprised his own advisors by announcing a 90-day pause on his across-the-board tariffs. However, he continues to escalate a trade war with China, which has announced an 84% tariff on US imports.

Since taking office, Trump has made a series of erratic and arbitrary announcements about tariffs — first imposing, then revoking, and then imposing again. This chaos is damaging to the economy and will be used by big corporations to increase consumer prices.

While the president has a lot of power over tariff policy, Congress can take action to rescind these tariffs. It’s clear that Trump can’t be trusted to protect our economy or our families.
