Friend — On Monday, I stood with my colleague Hakeem Jeffries, New York State Senator Zellnor Myrie, New York State Assembly Member Latrice Walker, and New York City Councilors Alicka Ampry-Samuel and Laurie Cumbo and demanded that NYPD officer Vincent J. D’Andraia be fired for violently assaulting Dounya Zayer.

Zayer was peacefully protesting the death of George Floyd in Brooklyn last week when Officer D’Andraia assaulted her — giving Zayer a concussion and causing her seizures.

We also demanded that the NYPD take immediate disciplinary actions against Deputy Inspector Craig Edelman — D’Andraia’s commanding officer — who watched the assault and did nothing to intervene.

We have now learned that — because of our advocacy — both officers have been suspended without pay.

While this is progress — it does not go far enough in serving justice for Dounya Zayer.

We must hold the NYPD accountable for every single act of violence perpetrated by officers that clearly don’t have the best interests for our community — and that starts by firing those who use excessive violence against people who do not pose a threat to officers or themselves.
