The Growing GRASS Project ([link removed]) , a key initiative of ASBN and Other-Half Processing that supports regenerative agriculture, farmers, ranchers and Native land restoration projects across the nation, is facing significant disruption due to the USDA’s funding freeze. This five-year $35 million project was set to support regenerative research and small and medium-sized US beef and bison producers — but $20 million in funds are currently frozen.

What’s at Stake

Without funding, critical work is at risk:
* $18 million of dedicated support for up to 1,000 producers across the US to participate in regenerative research, value-added markets and grazing educational opportunities.
* $2 million in project funding slated for the small- and medium-sized plants that do most of the United States’ regenerative meat processing.

On March 17, 2025, Liza LaManna, ASBN Manager of Agriculture Policy, advocated for farmworker rights alongside members of Alianza Nacional de Campesinas, Inc., presenting key policy priorities— including fair wages, workplace protections, and inclusion in labor laws— to Senator Welch and other Mid-Atlantic congressional offices. She emphasized the essential role farmworkers play in sustaining agricultural supply chains and urged policymakers to support stronger labor protections and enforcement measures.

Chemical Watch News | Vermont House approves legislation expanding state’s PFAS ban ([link removed]) | March 19, 2025 | The Vermont House advanced H 238, which would expand the state’s PFAS ban to include container linings treated with fluorine, cleaning products, and dental floss. If adopted by the Senate and signed into law by the governor, H 238 would also require reports addressing: other states’ PFAS regulations and whether Vermont should adopt similar programs, PFAS in complex durable goods, and exposures to the persistent compounds from food. The bill is presently under consideration in the VT Senate Committee on Health and Welfare.

** New ASBI Board Member Spotlight: Meet Rajiv S. Joshi!

Wizipan (Wee-zee-pan) Little Elk Garriott (he/him) is an enrolled member of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe in South Dakota. Since 2021, he has served as the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary – Indian Affairs in the U.S. Department of the Interior. In this role, he served as the first assistant and principal advisor to the Assistant Secretary – Indian Affairs, in the development and interpretation of policies affecting Indian Affairs bureaus, offices, and programs. Prior to his appointment in the U.S. Department of the Interior, Mr. Garriott served as chief executive officer from 2012 to 2021 of the Rosebud Economic Development Corporation, an ecosystem of Tribal organizations serving the Rosebud Indian Reservation. In this capacity, Mr. Garriott led and started businesses and community-based programs, including a Native language immersion school and a 1,500-head buffalo herd. Mr. Garriott was born and raised on the Rosebud Indian Reservation, where he attended St. Francis Indian School, a
Bureau of Indian Affairs (now Bureau of Indian Education) facility. He has a Bachelor of Arts degree in American Studies from Yale University. Mr. Garriott received his Juris Doctor degree in 2008 from the University of Arizona’s James E. Rogers College of Law.

DRBC Hosts "Water & Waste" Roundtable with sustainability leader TerraCycle (NJSBC)

ASBN's "Clean Water is Good for Business ([link removed]) " steering committee member Delaware River Basin Commission (DRBC) recently hosted a "Water & Waste" roundtable at TerraCycle ([link removed]) 's headquarters in Trenton, N.J. The event offered an opportunity for folks to connect and engage with one another and to share ideas and perspectives on the water-waste connection, as well as on Delaware River Basin water quality and the economic impacts of clean water. NJSBC joined DRBC's “Our Shared Waters ([link removed]) ” partners working across sectors to improve and protect the Delaware River Basin's shared water resources, as well as local elected officials.
