Hello friend,

Eight African countries have just added their voices to calls for a debt justice law in a letter that has gone directly to Rachel Reeves, the chancellor [1]. They want urgent action on a global debt crisis that is trapping countries like theirs in unjust debt.

The letter says that the signatories, which include South Africa, Zambia and Mozambique:

** “…pay tribute to the men and women in our region who sacrificed their lives to bring the freedom from colonialism that we enjoy today. However, political freedom alone is not enough without sustainable socio-economic development that lifts our people from poverty to prosperity”
------------------------------------------------------------

In the last few months, MPs have heard from over 1,500 Debt Justice campaigners like you, in support of a bill on debt cancellation that’s being heard in parliament. If passed, this bill could lead to millions of pounds worth of debts being cancelled for countries in crisis.
friend, will you email your MP today and join the growing chorus of voices around the world who are demanding action on the debt crisis?

Debt repayments for lower-income countries have trebled in the last decade. [2] As described in the letter to the chancellor, this

** “global debt crisis ... threatens a deep and lasting scar on our nations’ plans for growth.”
------------------------------------------------------------

Our MPs need to hear from us on this pressing issue. The more they hear from their constituents, the more likely they’ll raise the debt crisis with the chancellor and put pressure on her to take action.
friend, will you take two minutes to send your MP an email today?

This year, campaigners and activists around the world are uniting to demand action on unjust debt. It’s the biggest movement for debt cancellation in a generation – and with nine in ten debt contracts between private lenders and lower-income countries overseen by UK law, the government here could play a big role in tackling the crisis. Together, we can make them listen – and act.

In solidarity,

Wiz, Eva, Jerome and everyone at Debt Justice
