Cai’sha* holds her son, Abdi*, while he is treated for severe acute malnutrition at a Save the Children clinic in Somalia.



Save the Children works in partnership with communities to deliver lifesaving programs focused on children’s health, education and protection – in the U.S. and around the world.


These programs are critical to the survival of children like 1-year-old Abdi in Somalia, who was suffering from severe acute malnutrition. Abdi’s mother, Cai’sha, was a farmer, but severe drought forced them to move to town. With few opportunities to find work, the family had little to eat.


Cai’sha brought Abdi to a Save the Children clinic when he began running a fever and had diarrhea. The staff treated him with emergency fluids through a nasal tube, and he was given milk, food and medicine. After a few days, he began to stabilize.

John, children like Abdi are struggling to survive in the face of hunger, conflict and natural disasters –and critical aid has just been pulled out from under them.
