Greetings, readers!

This week’s Leadership newsletter comes with a bit of personal news: By the time you read this, I will be out on parental leave! But rest assured, NPQ’s managing editor, Coty Poynter, will oversee the newsletter until I return.

Excited and fortunate as I find myself, it is still a distinctly unsettling time to be (temporarily) turning attention away from the nonprofit sector. In the few months since Trump took office, we’ve seen escalating attempts to discredit journalism, a crucial resource that builds power and resistance under authoritarian regimes ([link removed]) ; the continued throttling of federal funds to nonprofits, impacting their ability to support the communities they serve ([link removed]) ; and an ominous executive memo ([link removed]) threatening nonprofits that “undermine the national interest,” though data show how entwined nonprofits are in nearly all aspects of American life ([link removed]) .

These challenges—and the sector’s absolute vitalness to our society—are all the more reason we need to continue building community, sharing ideas, and standing up for our work.
