For campaigns, often in the weeks leading up to an election, supporters, driven by a feedback loop of positive updates from a campaign, will fall into a state of complicity thinking “looks like the campaign has got it from here” and stop making vital small dollar donations. We still have time to become the plane that breaks out of the spiral but that window is rapidly closing. Here’s how a campaign death spirals: first fundraising slows, then we run out of the money needed for ‘spending money to make money,’ then field/GOTV grinds to a halt, and then we are in a dire spot come E-day. Presently we find ourselves at extreme risk of heading into such a spiral. Unless we can make a rapid course correction our fundraising situation could drive a cascading set of budget shortfalls and result in the campaign equivalent of ‘mechanical failure’ that would lead to our demise. In all departments outside of fundraising things are going beyond great and we have soooo much momentum. But we cannot be complacent now.
