Team,

Institutionalized racism is once again ravaging our community. The images I have seen and the stories I have heard from our communities have been beyond disturbing.

They highlight what happens when people do not feel heard.

George Floyd was murdered, and the response to this blatant act of racism by those in uniform has not risen to the moment.

Members of the NYPD have acted recklessly and carelessly in the face of peaceful protests — and in doing so have broken their oath to protect and serve our community.

I refuse to stand idly by while our neighbors, friends, and loved ones are harmed at the hands of those who have vowed to protect and to serve.

Peaceful protesters should be able to exercise their First Amendment right and call out injustices without fear of retaliation or retribution — and that is why we must demand regulations be put in place to ensure that racist cops are not given a simple slap on the hand when they choose to violate the very rules they’re meant to enforce.

In the days and weeks ahead, I pledge to do everything in my power to ensure that these blatant acts of racism are addressed with the severity of the acts themselves.

Stay safe,

Yvette
