Dear
SPUC supporter,
Another week of the Committee stage of the assisted suicide bill has gone by. The Committee examining the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill has continued to reject amendments that might make the Bill safer, leveraging the inbuilt majority created when the members were picked by the Bill’s sponsor, Kim Leadbeater.

On Tuesday,
members voted ([link removed]) 13 to 8 against an amendment that would have protected people with Down’s syndrome from being coerced into ending their lives.

The amendment was supported by 50 groups, including Down’s Syndrome UK, the National Down’s Syndrome Policy Group, and Down’s Syndrome Scotland.

Shockingly, Kit Malthouse MP, one of the main cheerleaders of the Bill on the Committee, tried to censor opposition to this move, asking if “measures” could be taken against individuals or groups who “misrepresent” the committee and its decision not to protect vulnerable people.

This rejection was not an isolated incident – you can see a list of rejected amendments compiled by journalist Dan Hitchens

The so-called scrutiny taking place at this Committee is shocking. However, we need to concentrate on the majority of MPs who are not on the Committee – the MPs who will get another chance to vote on this Bill at Third Reading.

We currently expect this vote to take place on 25^th April. That gives us exactly seven weeks to defeat this Bill.

Remember, we need just 28 MPs to switch from supporting to opposing this Bill in order to defeat it. We need to campaign like never before.

Here are three actions you can take:
1. Lobby your MP in person

While writing is very valuable, the most effective form of lobbying is to go and see your MP in person. Going to see your MP is probably the most impactful campaign action one can take. We know that MPs are often convinced to back a particular campaign through being moved by a constituent’s story. Our side of the debate needs to be doing this more.

We have produced a guide to lobbying your MP in person specifically on this issue. Please use this and the briefing on the Bill to go and lobby your MP in person.

(If this is not something you are able to do, then please keep contacting your MP by letter or email.)

We have also made a new version of the briefing on the Bill, which includes the removal of sign-off by a High Court Judge.

2. Order our petition postcards

We have launched a major petition calling on the Prime Minister to commit to long-term reform of hospice care funding as part of its 10-year plan for the NHS, so that every hospice has the resources it needs to properly care for dying patients.

The message is “YES to our hospices, NO to assisted suicide”.

You can order copies of the petition postcard to distribute at church and to family and friends. Completed postcards should be posted back to SPUC HQ.

This is another way to raise public awareness of the issue, and to put pressure on politicians to focus on real care, not killing.

3. Order door-to-door flyers

We have printed an updated version of our door-to-door flyer, which reflects the situation after Second Reading. This flyer explains that the Bill can still be defeated, and links to our webtool for people to write to their MPs. You can order copies to deliver door to door or for use at churches.

We are in the fight of our lives to defeat this Bill, and we have just seven weeks to do it. Please do as many of these actions are you are able to.

With best wishes,

PS: Make sure you tell us anything you’ve heard from your MP, whether in person or by letter/email. This is vital intelligence.
