Dear
SPUC supporter,
Another week of the Committee stage of the assisted suicide bill has gone by. The Committee examining the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill has continued to reject amendments that might make the Bill safer, leveraging the inbuilt majority created when the members were picked by the Bill’s sponsor, Kim Leadbeater.
On Tuesday, members voted 13 to 8 against an amendment that would have protected people with Down’s syndrome from being coerced into ending their lives.
The amendment was supported by 50 groups, including Down’s Syndrome UK, the National Down’s Syndrome Policy Group, and Down’s Syndrome Scotland.
Shockingly, Kit Malthouse MP, one of the main cheerleaders of the Bill on the Committee, tried to censor opposition to this move, asking if “measures” could be taken against individuals or groups who “misrepresent” the committee and its decision not to protect vulnerable people.
This rejection was not an isolated incident – you can see a list of rejected amendments compiled by journalist Dan Hitchens here.
The so-called scrutiny taking place at this Committee is shocking. However, we need to concentrate on the majority of MPs who are not on the Committee – the MPs who will get another chance to vote on this Bill at Third Reading.
We currently expect this vote to take place on 25th April. That gives us exactly seven weeks to defeat this Bill.
Remember, we need just 28 MPs to switch from supporting to opposing this Bill in order to defeat it. We need to campaign like never before.
Here are three actions you can take:
