Since January 20th, we have witnessed law enforcement carry out mass raids across the country, terrorizing, rounding up, and deporting thousands. The pathway to asylum has been blocked. Families have been separated. Vulnerable communities are wracked by uncertainty and fear. Communities have mobilized en masse and, at Muslim Advocates, we are working to support those heroic efforts and to combat this administration’s wanton targeting of immigrants.
In 2017, President Trump issued the first Muslim and African Bans. Thousands of travellers from predominantly Muslim countries were detained, humiliated, and cut off from loved-ones and opportunities. We have a shared responsibility to prevent that from happening again.
Muslim Advocates and our partners brought the successful Emami/Pars litigation [[link removed]] to confront the injustice of the prior Muslim and African Bans. And since 2019 we have championed the NO BAN Act [[link removed]] , which would extend immigration law’s nondiscrimination provisions to religion. It would also require that any travel restriction imposed under the Immigration and Nationality Act be based on specific and credible facts, and in service of a compelling government interest. Without the limitations of the NO BAN Act, we will continue to see presidents abuse their power by closing the borders arbitrarily or based on thinly veiled religious or racial hate. We are working along with No Muslim Ban Ever [[link removed]*2F*2Fwww.nomuslimbanever.com*2F___.YXAzOnJ0bTphOmc6ZjZhYjYzZDQ2ZjI1YjkzNjg0ZTIwY2NlMzg4OTlhYjg6NzphOGY3OjIwMmQ4Y2EyYjZkOGM4ZjlhNTUzODU1MTYzYjMzMDg4ZDM0NWRiMDdhZjZkMTczNjAzMjVjOTJjZWFhMWEyN2I6aDpUOk4] —an alliance of over 100 diverse civic, civil rights, faith and community organizations—to educate communities about the expected travel ban and on how to engage with their elected officials.
